“The Uncertainty Has Settled” to be screened at European Parliament

Dutch filmmaker Marijn Poels is to showcase his new film in Brussels at a special screening and discussion in the European Parliament on October 18^th.

Poels will be present a fresh insight into the paralysed and dogmatised political debate regarding climate change, energy policy and the role of the media. The Dutch filmmaker’s award winning documentary was entirely self-financed. The story is a highly personalized search to understand the impact of current energy policies and the uncertainties within the climate science they are justified by. “My documentary is not a scientific story, rather a social documentary making people aware of the unsettled debate”, said Poels. He noticed a unilateral media coverage, where critics are silenced in the mainstream debate, and are even personally attacked as deniers rather than debated reasonably. Poels calls this “A very worrying development”.

Poels takes a tractor in search of home-grown potatoes but finds that EU farmers only farm wind and biogas these days for subsidies to ‘stop climate change’ – real food is not profitable.

Scientifically there are many nuances beyond the consensus on climate change. The science is extremely complex and relatively young, hence changing all the time. “Different scientific perspectives and nuances should be taken more seriously” Poels suggests.

The film shows how lobbyists and media exaggerate facts to favour their political beliefs. “The radical policies are not all proportional. Some evolved into money slurping businesses causing some quite negative impacts on society and the economy” says Poels. Prior to this documentary his film making career for the last 10 years has focused on 3rd World issues. “Globally, these policies are limiting the economic development of poor countries even more, so nuances are mostly welcome I suppose. Climate change is no longer just a scientific or an energy problem. Instead, attitudes towards climate change have become a badge of political identity, creating a polarised debate that places ideological and tribal conflicts above practical results that are best for most people”, Poels said.

Member of the Parliament Olaf Stuger, (Europe of Nations and Freedom) invited Poels to screen the documentary, with discussion afterwards. “Whatever the climate will do, I hope I can open the suffocating debate to more reasoned scrutiny, even if only a tiny bit”, said Poels

“The Uncertainty Has Settled” wordt vertoond voor het Europees Parlement.

Documentaire filmmaker Marijn Poels zal zijn nieuwste film tijdens een speciale voorstelling vertonen in het Europees Parlement in Brussel op 18 oktober. Zijn volledig zelf-gefinancierde en bekroonde documentaire is een zeer persoonlijke zoektocht naar de impact van het huidige energiebeleid en de onzekerheden binnen de klimaatwetenschap. “Mijn documentaire is geen wetenschappelijk verhaal, eerder een sociaal maatschappelijke documentaire waarin ik mensen bewust maak van het eenzijdige debat”, aldus Poels. Hij vindt de rol van de media te eenzijdig waar critici worden genegeerd of weggezet als flapdrollen.

Poels noemt dit ‘Een zeer zorgwekkende ontwikkeling’.

De film laat zien hoe lobbyisten en media niet zelden feiten overdrijven om hun politieke overtuigingen kracht bij te zetten. “De energietransitie wordt te radicaal doorgevoerd waarin juist de arme bevolking het meest te leiden heeft”. Poels, die zich de afgelopen tien jaar met name richtte op ontwikkelingssamenwerking ziet daarin een risico. Globaal beperkt dit klimaatbeleid de economische ontwikkeling van armere landen alleen maar meer, dus alle nuances zijn wat hem betreft meer dan welkom. Ook bezoekt hij in zijn film beroemd wetenschapper Freeman Dyson en controversieel meteoroloog Piers Corbyn die kritisch staan tegenover de officiële klimaatwetenschap.

Klimaatverandering is niet meer alleen een wetenschappelijk of een energieprobleem, vindt Poels. “Je houding ten aanzien van de klimaatverandering is een stempel van politieke identiteit geworden, waarbij een gepolariseerd debat plaatsvindt dat ideologische en tribale conflicten boven praktische resultaten plaatst”.

EU Parlementariër Olaf Stuger, (Europe of Nations and Freedom) nodigde Poels uit om de documentaire te screenen, met bespreking achteraf. “Wat het klimaat ook zal doen, ik hoop dat ik het verstikkende debat een klein beetje kan openbreken naar een gezond en realistische discussie,”
